How Facebook Trending Works

Recent developments for/against the removal of features or changes to how people interact with You can probably trace at least part of the demise of social media giant, Facebook, back to their trending topics feature.

As we all know, this allowed users to add or suggest popular content by picking an already-existing topic and adding in some comments and/or reactions.

By giving people the opportunity to contribute to these trends, they became invested in them which made it more likely that they would click on the link attached to the trend and view (or like) the content.

This is why sometimes you will find that a new movie or TV show gets so many ‘likes’ quickly due to someone who has just discovered it through its appearance in a trending topic.

With the ever growing amount of content out there, having a way to easily identify something interesting was needed. And thus, the birth of the rising tide lifts all boats concept was born!

Now, let us look into the details of what happened to this article!

What happened to this article?

It is your job as a writer to make sure your reader understands the main points of each paragraph you write. Make sure to emphasize key parts of your paragraphs using bullets and supporting statements.

In this case, our paragraph was about a story that was heavily involved in the trending news community.

What are the different types of trending news?

The term ‘trending topic’ is typically used to describe content that is gathering large amounts of attention online, making it trended-upon. This could be something new like a movie or TV show, an event, or anything else that gets many comments and shares.

Other terms include buzzword, hot topic, top talker, popular, or striking topic. They all imply similar concepts: Something people are talking about very much these days.

With the growing popularity of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, their users have become creative in finding and sharing interesting information via chat, tags, and reactions. These tools gave rise to the concept of using crowd wisdom to determine what will appeal to your followers and gain them attention.

That’s where trends come into play. A trend is defined as:

Something that is increasingly common ibl e a rising number or proportion

In other words, if more and more people are talking about an item or activity, then it has entered into trend status.

For example, back when I first started writing this article (January 2018), the word “trendy” was widely considered to be outdated and boring. People didn’t use it, and it wasn’t spoken about too often.

However, over the past few years, you can now find instances of the word popping up in both literature and everyday conversation.

What are the different sources of trending news?

The ever-growing list of features that claim to be able to determine what will become popular soon includes services that monitor conversations, compare comments across sites, track how users interact with content on social media platforms, and more.

Mostly, these tools scan large amounts of data to find patterns or relationships that imply an influence in popularity. Because there is no set definition of what makes something trendy, however, it’s difficult to know whether the predictions are accurate — and even more important to evaluate how well they work over time!

It’s also worth noting that not all of these applications have clear benchmarks for what success looks like. As such, some experts believe that comparing one tool against another is less helpful than assessing how well each one works independently.

This seems particularly relevant for people using technology to explore new ideas and things, which often involve looking at things you wouldn’t normally consider reading or watching.

Who decides what is trending news?

So how do people decide which stories get featured as “trending” in the News Feed? It depends on who you are!

If you use public pages, then it seems like there is no real process for deciding what will be deemed important content. You just have to accept whatever status quo level of engagement the page owner has set up.

For business pages this can work in their favor since they are trying to market themselves or their product. But if your goal is to spread awareness about an issue or increase participation in an online community, then this platform may not be ideal for you.

As we discussed before, social media platforms are corporations that make money through advertising so the more engaging posts advertisers pay to show their ads next to makes perfect sense.

Advertisers want to reach as many people as possible, so making sure that topic isn’t too controversial or niche helps ensure success. That’s why it's hard to find truly grassroots trends- those things only happen when enough people are engaged with an idea.

What are the different trending topics?

So, what is it that makes an item trend? It’s when many people talk about an item or topic very frequently. They may even make statements like “This has been up in trends for weeks now, but I just finally got around to reading it because of this article” or “I have been hearing about this item since xxx date”.

When they do this, it creates a sense of urgency to read the material. People feel compelled to check out the item so that they will know how things are working for others. This is why getting some great insights from these items really works — we all want to look into them more deeply!

So, how does Facebook determine which items to include in its Trends list?

It uses three main factors: engagement (likes and comments), growth and popularity, and timing. These are discussed at length below.

Why is Facebook trending?

So what are people talking about online right now? It’s no surprise that things like “Is it weird that I feel kind of happy when my friends tell me I look fat?” or “Why does my dog love to eat poop food” have gone viral.

These types of topics get shared for several reasons. For one, they make us laugh – a little bit. And then, they make us think about ourselves and our relationships with other people.

We all need to talk about these sorts of things from time to time. They help remind us there’s more than one person in this world.

And while some may find these thoughts uncomfortable at first, most eventually realize how much their own self-esteem depends on how others perceive them.

So yes, it can be uncomfortable, but also enlightening.

Another reason why these conversations are so popular is because they bring up difficult questions we don’t usually address.

For example, if you read someone else’s comment about their body and it makes you unhappy, do you stick around and prove the commenter wrong? Or do you walk away feeling bad for having made the comments in the first place?

This isn’t an easy question to answer, but asking it puts into perspective just how important your relationship with yourself is.

What should you post on Facebook to be trended?

Starting in early 2018, however, something new was added to the trending feature- it began surfacing content that people posted or made mention of.

This is called ‘relevance contour’ and it basically means giving more weight to posts from sources that are closer and more related to what others are discussing around the internet at this moment.

By doing so, the algorithm encourages conversation and link sharing which can boost engagement and influence.

Are there any negative effects of Facebook trending?

Although it may seem like a fun way to see what all your friends are talking about, creating trends can have some serious implications.

For one, people get really obsessed with getting “likes” for their posts so they use the tool as an excuse to put more content up. This over-posting sometimes leads to poor quality or even fake content being spread through the platform.

Tapping into popular themes or topics gives the impression that someone is interested in these things which helps boost their image and popularity.

On top of this, media companies profit off of the algorithm by paying to be featured higher. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it does contribute to the growth and domination of the company.

What should you do if you think your content was a source of a trend?

If you feel that your posts were heavily shared, commented on, or promoted as part of the influence of a popular tag or topic, then you have some options for compensation.

You can always contact social media platforms to see whether they offer any form of reward or compensation. An increasingly common way to earn money online is through the use of something called rewards programs. These are typically websites where you are awarded points or discounts for completing an activity (like buying a product) – but it often times is to directly compensate for the work you put into promoting their product or service.

For example, if you created amazing content about how to do yoga with your feet, then you might be rewarded with a discount at a local yoga studio! Or perhaps you wrote a great article about why dogs make the best friends, so you get paid to promote dog training classes.
