How Trends Go Trending

A trend is something that becomes more popular or prevalent, typically for a specific length of time. When it’s no longer seen, then we call that idea or concept “trendy.” Think about how people used to wear hats with feathers and now they're totally in-theory (no really, look it up).
There are several ways that ideas become trends. People may imitate the source of the trend, creating their own version of the concept. They may add features to the original concept, making it more refined or improved. Or, they could completely shift the nature of the concept, changing what it is and why people like it.
A classic example of the first type of trend is the headphones. Before earbuds were invented, people wore large, over-the-ear headphones. It was very fashionable at the time! But as technology advanced, earbuds became smaller and more discreet, so people gave them a try. Then someone made wireless headphones, which have gone beyond being just a niche product.
Another instance of imitation is using an element from the past to create your current design. For instance, taking a sash away with waterfall curtains — these got popular because there are some beautiful windows designed as such.
Taste changes, too. As fashion trends come and go, concepts that are considered elegant or stylish fade out while others rise to stay. Take corsets, for example.
Trends come and go

There’s no way to prove it, but there’s a good chance that you were just given a solid reason why trends will always be around. It’s because people want them!
There is an endless stream of products with catchy slogans and logos that make lots of money for their manufacturers. And while some are clearly better than others, none have ever been completely without success.
That’s how companies make their profits — by creating something people like and offering it to everyone for less money (or even free!).
So if you’re looking to pick up where your current wardrobe left off, look out for those leopard print shoes or striped shirts popular last year. Or find yourself a white kaftan like one famous blogger did.

Trends are influenced by many factors

What makes something become popular is never just because of the thing itself, it’s always due to several other contributing factors. For example, the reason why yoga has gone mainstream is not only because people enjoy doing it, but also because there are so many different types of yoga out there!
There are lotus pose workouts, Vinyasa flow classes, restorative poses, power yoga, shavasana (corpse pose), etc. All of these have made yoga accessible to anyone who wants to try it.
The same goes for motivational speaking and self-help books. While some individuals may feel that what someone else says about life and success was written very heavily with inspiration and motivation, others may disagree.
However, we can agree that most self-help books contain at least one helpful tip or idea that we can apply to our lives. This influence is still important even if some parts seem too direct or pushy.
Self-help books often tell their readers to be honest with themselves and do things they've never done before, which can sometimes be hard. However, once you realize that this advice applies to yourself, you can begin to understand how to make changes in your own life.
Popular trends come and go

It’s not that popular styles or fashion concepts never make it into mainstream popularity, but what makes something “trendy” is how quickly people adopt them. A trend will only really take off when enough people recognize it as attractive — even if just for a short time.
The way this happens is through exposure. People who already like the look may find other sellers offering similar products, or they may read about the product on social media or news sites and then purchase them.
That initial buzz eventually spreads via word of mouth. And because we’re living in an ever-connected world where information travels at lightning speed, your next shopping trip might be done with help from someone else you know!
Some examples
Many consider black leather to be a trendy material, so buying some new shoes in this style can help you stay in touch with this latest trend. Or maybe a simple white t-shirt and dark denim set is all you need to update your wardrobe.
But there are also more elaborate versions of these classic looks which make them seem much flashier and thus more fashionable. These extended trends typically fall by their lonesome soon after they hit the market, however – sometimes within months!

It's important to remember that while trends are fun, no one needs a reminder every day (or twice a year) that plastic isn't everyone's favorite material.
There are many trends that come to life

Many fashion trends begin with someone who loves clothes so much they can’t stop buying them! They love looking at, talking about, and investing in new pieces. As soon as these things happen, others around them learn how to do it too.
This is what happened with our first trend. People copied the clothing item or style and added their own personal touches to make it fit their personality better.
For example, when leggings were seen as weird and uncomfortable, people would take time to experiment with them and find one length and pair of pants that works for them.
There are also many trends that go nowhere

It is very common to find yourself talking about a trend – something that people seem to be obsessed with or trying to do more of. You get lots of discussions and debates around it, people jumping onto either side.
But then you will notice that few people actually stay in style long enough to see if this fad goes away or not. This happens because most people don’t have the resources to keep up with the trends and styles that everyone else has picked out as being fashionable.
As such, they will kind of hang around just within the same area for a while before deciding whether to make a switch. Or maybe they never really switch in the first place but instead settle into what seems like a comfortable middle ground.
Popular trends come and go

There is always something new coming into fashion, from hairstyles to clothes. Materials such as leather or plastic are replaced by newer ones that seem to disappear just as quickly. This is because popular trends must hit their shelf-life before they can be considered trash.
Clothing brands will sometimes directly follow what was popular a year ago with a new design concept or element. For example, if there were lots of tight jeans and white shirts then bronzers would become very popular! Or, if people loved long, flowing hair, shorter and tighter styles have taken over.
By having materials that “fade away”, we lose respect for them. If nothing else, it sends a message to other designers that it is not important to invest in durable clothing.
Examples of popular trends

We’ve identified 10 trendy products or styles that have gone viral, and with good reason. They are now ubiquitous across merchandise lines, industries, and genres. If you see something like it before, chances are it has been copied or inspired by this famous trend.
Many people credit these popular trends to an initial success factor: they were in-style. When these things came around, people already had evidence of their effectiveness so they bough into them. Or, they looked cool! A lot of people want to be associated with a trending item or style.
Another theory is that these successful items seem familiar. People feel more comfortable buying what has “been done before” because it seems similar to something they own already. In fact, some say that when something new comes along, we lose faith in the traditional way something functions and instead, shift our attention onto how well this new version works.
These two factors — being in fashion and feeling familiar — play major roles in why a product becomes popular.
Examples of less popular trends

There are several examples of lesser known fashion trends that still have small groups of people wearing them, but not to the extent that they become fashionable. These include:
Sling bags
Sleeping bag coats
Dressing in leggings or track pants with a dress over it (known as layering)
Tunic dresses with shawl sleeves or v-neck sweatshirts
Long sleeve shirts with cuffs that can be rolled up or down
Keyhole necklines
With these types of clothing, what makes the design interesting is how much of the garment’s shape is exposed. More classic silhouettes are concealed by the material, making them more elegant.
Trendy new fashions often start with something simple that everyone has seen before, then someone adds onto the concept and makes their own version of it. For example, long sleeve shirt dress variations originated from French courtly robes that would drop below the knee and were tied at the waist.
Other versions may add fluffier materials or shorter hems, but usually retain the same idea — loose fitting clothes that show off the body’s curves.
