Changing styles or trends are always interesting to watch, especially when it comes to clothing. When you can identify an item as having been in style for a few seasons now, it is referred to as a trendy piece.

T-shirts have been seen many different ways over the years. Some say t-shirt designs have gone through several waves of popularity. Others claim that certain styles are totally impossible to replicate.

Whatever type of trend t-shirts seem to fall into, there’s no denying they are popular all around the world! In fact, some say t-shirts themselves are becoming obsolete due to their lack of versatility.

If you ever wanted to create your own unique t-shirt design, this article will help you do just that! Here we will talk about how to make a fashionable t-shirt pattern using simple shapes and colors.

Making your very own t-shirt design has never been easier! While not everyone feels comfortable creating their own artwork, anyone can learn how to make their own patterns easily.

Here I will go more in depth by showing you how to make a basic striped t-shirt pattern. This pattern can then be modified and improved upon until you get something super cool and personal.

To make my t-shirt pattern even more complex, I will also give you ideas to mix and match materials to achieve different looks.

Make a pattern

A t-shirt design is made up of three main components: shape, color, and texture. The textures can be plain, printed, or woven. Prints are easy to add into your designs as long as you have some white space around them. Woven fabrics work very well in t-shirts because there are little loops all over the material which create an attractive look.

You will need to find appropriate materials for your print or weave before you can make your pattern. These should be casual clothing items that men or women can easily grab without too much trouble. Materials like flannel shirts, sweatshirts, denim, and leather are good starting places if you aren’t sure where to get them.

Once you have found your base fabric, it must be sewn together. For prints, cut out each individual element and stitch them together using matching thread and colors. Use silk or satin stitching for the best effect. For woven patterns, use parallel horizontal or vertical threads to create the illusion of depth.

Dye the t-shirt

Along with picking your style, what color shirt you will dye also matters! There are many ways to dye a new top depending on if it is casual or dressy, and how much decoration you want to add. For example, if you would like to try trending sleeve shirts, then choosing one that has shorter sleeves can help you achieve this!

Toweling is very easy to do, just make sure to use only white towels for washing and black ones for drying. When washing, use a shampoo and conditioner appropriate for wool fabrics and of good quality. You can also mix natural oils into the wash to keep the fabric soft!

When hanging up the washed t-shirts, use an iron and temperature regulation to hang them correctly. This way, they will dry more naturally and slowly which helps preserve the shape of the garment.

General tips: when washing clothes, remember to use cold water and test a small piece of material to see if it washes properly before investing more in these products.

Sew the t-shirt

Once you have your fabric, there are two main things that need to be done to make an infinite number of trendy t shirts. The first is sewing the shirt! This can either be using a machine or hand sewing it.

If you are more familiar with making clothes using machines then this will be much easier to do. For example, if you were making jeans, you would cut out the back pocket, add rivets, wash them, and then sew the waist together. If you are more experienced in doing things by hand then go about setting up the sleeve seams, etc like normal clothing making.

The second part of making t-shirts is adding fashion touches such as embroidery, laces, and/or trimmings. These can easily be sewn onto the shirt after it is finished being washed and dried.

Make the lining

The second part of designing your new shirt is creating the inner layer or liner. This is typically made out of cotton or polyester material and was often times left off previous tight-fitting shirts to preserve their shape.

Now, however, there are many ways to use this feature. You can add some additional style to your shirt by adding ruffles, lace, or other trims that go all the way up to your neckline. Or you could even dress it up more with exposed underlayers such as shirttails or undershirts!

Your options are truly endless when it comes to making an outfit from start to finish.

Stitch the lining onto the t-shirt

Once you have your fabric, let’s talk about how to stitch the internal liner into the shirt. You will need to determine if this is needed or not! If it is, then what kind of stitching method you should use.

If the sleeve of the dress has an attached cuff, then we would stick the raw edge in the machine with right side facing down. For the rest of the arm, we would match up the pattern pieces and sew them together using our chosen sewing technique.

For instance, if we were making a crew neck dress, we could just cut off the excess material at the neck line and then attach the remaining piece in place. Or, for a drop waist dress, we would measure the desired width of the waist band and then cut that extra length away and pin it in place.

Once those two pieces are sewn in place, then take the needle out and trim the threads.

Try on the t-shirt for fit

When shopping for new clothing, one of the first things you should do is try on the shirt. This way, you can make sure it fits well and that it looks good with your current wardrobe. You want to make sure it is not too tight or loose, and that it does not hang heavily on you.

You also want to know if the material feels nice against your skin. Are there any wrinkles or irritants? Does it feel thin and flimsy like plastic rather than weighty and sturdy? If so, this may be a sign that it will break down quickly due to no lasting quality.

Also consider how easy it was to put on the garment, whether it required ironing or if it washed easily. And lastly, assess whether it made you feel comfortable wearing it around your neck.

Flatten the t-shirt for a wash-dry cycle

When washing your new shirt, make sure you launder it together with other clothing items so that it does not get wrinkled or tangled. You can also add an item such as a woolen sweater or towel to help dry out the shirt more quickly!

When drying your new shirt, use either a machine or hand dryer to prevent wrinkles. If there are small areas of wet fabric, put some plastic bags in the dryer to take care of them.

After both washes and drenches, let the shirt sit until it is completely dried before putting it away. This will minimize ooze and moisture retention in the garment.

Hang to dry

Most people use lukewarm water and an old, clean towel to hang your new shirt from. This is usually fine unless you want your clothes to shrink in size! Using cold water and colder towels will slow down the drying process, which is good because this takes longer than if it were warmer!

If your skin gets wet when hanging up the garment, try using a slightly darker color wash cloth or even hand-wash only ones since they are not porous as regular laundry detergent uses.
