How Has Marketing Evolved Since The Industrial Revolution

A lot of people talk about the death of marketing, but what they fail to realize is that we’re at the very beginning of an era of hyper-marketing.
In fact, I would argue that we are in the midst of our greatest marketing boom ever!
Think back for a second to when most people started hearing about marketing.
It was around 2004–2005 when the term “marketing” first became widely spread. Before then, it was typically referred to as “advertising and sales.” But starting in 2005, marketers took over social media, advertising, direct mail, public relations, and more.
And today? We have the beginnings of digital marketing, which includes things like search engine optimization (SEO) and influencer marketing. All these practices work together to promote your product or service.
So how has marketing evolved since the industrial revolution? It’s gone through some major transitions, that’s for sure!
Here, we’ll take a look at five key changes in marketing and what each one means. Then, we’ll discuss why these shifts happen and how you can use them to boost your business.
1. The Change from Mass Production To Consumable Goods
Let’s start with something many people probably know – the difference between production and consumption goods.
Digital marketing

Over the past few years, digital marketing has become an integral part of almost every business’s overall marketing strategy. Technology has leveled the playing field in terms of how businesses market themselves to customers.
It is not uncommon to see large companies investing significant resources in social media, mobile applications, or other interactive platforms. This is due in part to the popularity of these services, but also because it makes sense to have your company be represented where and how people can find you online.
Digital marketing includes all types of advertising strategies, such as using social media to grow your audience, creating engaging content to attract new readers, and finding different ways to reward clients for doing business with you.
These days, there are many ways to advertise virtually without ever leaving your computer screen. Because technology is so advanced, most experts agree that digital marketing will continue to evolve at a rapid pace.
Social media

As we know, social media has become one of the biggest marketing tools in use today. It is not limited to just posting statuses and pictures or tweeting about brands, you can actually create an advertisement that people will pay attention to!
With companies investing large amounts of money into advertising on social sites like Facebook and YouTube, using this medium to promote your product or service is very cost-effective.
Many businesses have leveraged social media to increase brand awareness, generate new leads, and find out what products and services are popular.
It is also easy to grow nervous when there’s a lot of competition – but with technology being so advanced, it is possible to track down who is talking about you and why.
By creating content that adds value to the community, you will attract more followers and interested parties.
Online marketing
Over the past few years, digital marketing has really taken off like crazy! Gone are the days when you could launch an offline business and try to market via word of mouth or print advertisements.
Now, with every major city having at least one large grocery store that offers online shopping, it is easy to start offering your services as an online buying consultant or personal shopper.
You can take all of your favorite brands’ products and create very specific lists using software programs such as Shopify or Amazon Product Ads. These tools make it simple to put up advertising banners for your clients and track conversions.
Online platforms also offer ways to generate revenue through things such as creating accounts for other sites or selling ads space on your site. The more traffic you have, the higher your income will be!
These websites give you free credits too so there is no risk in trying out different types of media marketing.
Influencer marketing

Over the past decade, another powerful tool in marketers’ arsenals has been dubbed “influencer marketing.” This is when you use non-paid influencers to promote products or services.
By adding value to what they talk about and by using their social media channels, you can gain exposure for your product or service.
This is not only effective for expanding brand awareness, but it also increases sales as people are more likely to purchase a product from someone they trust.
The key difference between traditional advertising and influence marketing is that the influencer gets paid for promoting the product while the advertiser doesn’t.
However, this isn’t always the case. Some brands will ask the influencer to do a review or giveaway of their product, which again, benefits them.
Smart advertising

A few decades ago, people thought advertisements were annoying or even harmful to you as an audience member. Now, however, we come across countless ads every day that are clever, informative, and entertaining.
This is not to say that all commercials are good, but instead of trying to eliminate marketing completely, how about we aim to have more meaningful, productive ones?
There’s no need for obnoxious slogans or flashy graphics; sometimes less is truly more when it comes to promoting a product.
Instead, use your imagination to find ways to incorporate marketing into other areas of your life – you will probably surprise yourself. For example, by creating a Facebook profile with a barely-existent presence, you can still get job offers and promotions.
Likewise, reading newspapers has become almost obsolete due to online journalism. What about paper towels? They may be outdated now, but they worked back in their time!
These days, though, there’s little space left for gimmicks. The evolution of technology means that you can promote a product in a way that doesn’t feel forced or artificial. Instead of telling people what a product does, show them!
Take YouTube videos, for instance. People enjoy watching these because they offer entertainment while also giving useful information.
Email marketing

In his book, The Power of Now, Tolle describes how we get distracted by our thoughts and feelings about past experiences and future anticipations. We are constantly thinking about what we did last week, what we will do next week, and so forth.
In addition to this internal preoccupation, we also have external distractions that pull us away from the present moment.
We watch TV, surf the internet, talk with friends and family, and engage in other activities that keep us occupied. This is why most people feel overwhelmed and stressed out during times at work and home – they’re just living in the past or the future!
Something that has become quite popular in recent years is the term mindfulness. Rather than focusing on the past or the future, mindfulness teaches you to be present and acknowledge what you are doing right now.
This concept applies not only to your daily life, but also to business. By being more aware and conscious of what you are doing every minute of the day, it can have profound effects on your performance as an employee and leader.
It can boost productivity and engagement, reduce stress, and strengthen relationships. All of these benefits come from the principle of non-distraction.
When you are focused solely on one thing, you lose focus on everything else. Becoming more mindful takes some practice, however.
The rise of the selfie

Ever since we started using tools to communicate, people have been capturing moments of their lives through still images or videos. Before smartphone cameras, this was done with large film rollers that you had to manually load into your device.
With the advent of digital photography, someone could take just about any photo at anytime and share it online without having to physically transport equipment. People quickly realized how fun taking pictures is, and now there are apps and websites where you can capture yourself and add captions to make your picture funny or interesting.
These self-produced photos and videos are called content marketing, and they are one of the most effective ways to market a product or service. By producing your own content, you will increase the exposure of your brand, boost engagement, and establish you as an influencer.
There are even some companies that use autofellishs, robotic devices that create fake human faces for you to upload your own selfies onto.
The future of marketing

As we enter an era where technology is moving at breakneck speed, our perception of what constitutes “marketing” will also evolve. Technology has always played a crucial part in shaping human culture, and it will do the same for marketers.
We see this already with how brands use social media to market products, how companies leverage online shopping sites and apps, and how advertisements now blend content with commercials to convey messages.
As more people adopt and rely on technologies like smartphones, these tools can be used to test out new advertising strategies or find new ways to target audiences.
With ever-growing amounts of data available, algorithms that analyze this information are becoming increasingly sophisticated (or even creating their own!). These advances allow us to draw conclusions about individuals and demographics much faster than before.
The availability of affordable digital marketing resources makes it possible for almost anyone to start experimenting with different strategies. This will only continue to grow as time goes on.
