Over the past few years, we have seen an explosion in social activism across the globe. From protests over environmental issues to calls for political revolutions, people are constantly engaging in creative ways to try and change the world for the better.

Some of these changes seem small at first, but add up as time goes on. A lot of them work together to create bigger impacts, making it worth your while to keep engaged with politics and society.

Here at The Nerdy Girlie House, we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools you can use to help promote equality and social justice. This is why we created our new course — Education Is a Weapon!

In this two-day online event, we will be talking about how different educational systems contribute to inequality and social injustice. We will also look into some easy steps you can take to improve your own education and literacy skills, and what resources are available to you.

The Industrial Revolution

During this period, large industry conglomerates emerged as market forces took over. Companies grew to be very big – even reaching sizes where one individual no longer had enough influence to directly affect the company’s success.

As companies got bigger, they needed to have larger supplies of raw materials and equipment. This led to the creation of vast supply chains that extended well beyond your typical family business.

These supply chain networks allowed for efficient movement of goods which in turn gave people more options when it came to finding employment. As such, there was an increase in productivity due to the availability of resources and technology.

This increased efficiency also meant lower prices for products because less expensive resources were used to make them. For example, during the industrial revolution steel costs only 10 dollars per ton! Nowadays, it can cost up to 100 times that.

Not only did these low-cost, high quality metals help fuel the growth of the new industries, but they also helped create a sense of community and cooperation. People worked together towards a common goal — making and distributing good products.

This feeling is what makes us loyal to our favorite brands and businesses. They give us value by offering us something useful or fun, and keep coming back because we want to feel like part of their team.

The Russian Revolution

One of the most significant revolutions in history happened almost one hundred years ago, when Russia underwent an uprising against their monarchy. When Nicholas II became too oppressive with his rule, revolutionaries took to the streets demanding change.

When Vladimir Lenin organized a group of radicals into a political party, they were able to spread their message more effectively. They promoted communist ideology, which inspired many people to join them in creating a new society.

Many countries have experienced some form of social revolution — from the French Revolution that overthrew the aristocracy, to the American Civil War that tore down the country’s established order, to the Arab Spring that brought about democratic elections in several Middle Eastern nations.

Market revolutions are similar. They bring about fundamental changes by encouraging individuals to invest in products or services that help improve their lives. Technology is a powerful tool for spreading these benefits.

This article will discuss three examples of market revolutions – the internet, mobile technology, and digital literacy. Each made substantial improvements to people’s daily lives, and all can be applied to promote societal change as we find power in online communities, use smartphones to connect with others, and teach people how to read using computer programs.

Let’s look at each in detail.

The Civil Rights Movement

As we know, the civil rights movement was an integral part of American history that focused heavily on racial equality. It is also important to note that while there were many different groups within this movement, none other had as much media coverage or attention from politicians like the Black Lives Matter movement does today.

Many people may not be familiar with some key players in the civil rights movement. People such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X are all well-known faces in our society today. These individuals played a significant role in bringing about change through social activism.

While most agree that the work Dr. King did to promote peaceful protests and nonviolence is what made a difference, he also advocated for economic justice. He wanted to see changes in how black Americans were treated in terms of employment opportunities, income, and overall access to resources.

This article will discuss his efforts towards economic justice and why they matter now.

The Feminist Movement

After World War II, women were given more opportunities in education and employment but there was still an uphill battle for equality. In fact, some countries made it illegal to require equal pay or allow men to enter into domestic relationships with other consenting individuals.

In the 1960s, however, feminists began to organize against what they perceived as unequal treatment of women. They demanded not only that women be granted the same rights as men, but also that their specific needs be addressed.

During this period, many feminist movements emerged. Some focused on achieving legal gender parity while others fought for greater inclusion. For example, some activists wanted abortion to be available without restriction while others pushed for legalizing prostitution.

Regardless of whether these demands are considered worthy by most people, one thing is clear: feminism sparked social change.

It motivated large numbers of people to take action and advocate for policies that benefit both men and women. This has paved way for more open conversations about inequality and how we can work towards creating a society where everyone is treated equally.

The Hippie Movement

As we mentioned earlier, the hippy movement was one of the major catalysts for social change in America. These people were called “freethinkers” which means they did not believe in organized religion and thought that moral values came from within yourself rather than external sources.

Many members of this group rejected capitalism and materialism by refusing to work for money or contribute to the capitalist system. Some even gave up their possessions and lived off the land!

Some members of the hippy community believed in socialism or communism. This is when society is run collectively instead of individually for the common good. They wanted to redistribute wealth so that no one has too much power over others.

Other parts of the hippy ideology focused more on spirituality and personal growth. Members tried to learn as many new things as possible and experimented with different lifestyles to see what worked for them.

The Digital Revolution

Over the past two decades, we have seen an explosion in technology. Technology has integrated into every aspect of our lives, from how we communicate to what kind of entertainment we consume to how efficiently we work.

Technology is now part of everything we do, and it can be traced back to one important development: the digital revolution.

The term “digital” typically refers to using computers or mobile devices to access online content and applications. For instance, when you look up something information-wise on Google, YouTube, or Facebook, that was originally designed as a way to create interactive advertisements for those companies.

However, with the rise of smartphones and the internet at large, this concept has been expanded. You can use your phone to read articles, research products, and even make purchases virtually anywhere! This is called ecommerce – buying things online via smartphone apps.

Another form of the digital era is the chat room. Almost all major social media sites like Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram started off as plain text messaging platforms. Now they offer users ways to interact with each other, share stories, and keep tabs on people and events. That’s why they are popular - they allow for more than just looking at pictures and status updates!

This article will talk about some examples of how the digital revolution influenced social change. These changes ranged from positive (like creating opportunities for individuals) to negative (like enabling modes of communication and behavior that were not always healthy).

The Scientific Revolution

During this period, people began to question many of the accepted theories of truth that were prevalent at the time. This is what we refer to as the Renaissance or Enlightenment, so named because it gave rise to both the Renaissance art movement and social change through enlightenment concepts like liberty and equality.

During this era, scientists began testing existing ideas about nature and creating new ones that are still used today. For instance, during the Renaissance, doctors would experiment with different cures for disease by studying how well they work and if there’s any evidence they could be passed onto other patients in some way.

This process of questioning and experimenting was not done exclusively only by intellectuals, but rather anyone who had access to books and knowledge. People throughout Europe conducted experiments and gathered data to prove or disprove various theories.

It took hold particularly among the upper classes due to their wealth, but slowly spread down into the lower class via educated refugees and travelers passing along knowledge.

The Artistic Revolution

A new era of artistic expression was ushered in with the Renaissance, built upon the work of those that came before. Artists experimented with different styles to convey their messages and express themselves creatively.

The development of painting allowed artists to use thicker paints to create more detailed images than possible before. Sculptors used thinner layers of paint to allow for more shapes to be made out of the material.

Architects innovated by using strong lines and proportion when designing buildings. Poets expressed themselves through the use of poetry and rhythm. Composers wrote music influenced by nature and structured patterns.

These are just some examples of how art has transformed over time!

After the Renaissance, Neoclassicism became very popular as artists imitated the works of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. This style is sometimes referred to as Classicism because it focused on studying classical literature and copying famous sculptures and paintings from this period.

Artists throughout history have inspired other artists to make new forms of art. Pablo Picasso, known for his abstract designs, studied Leonardo da Vinci and Henri de Miller, both of whom designed beautifully complex still lifes (an area of art focusing on an object alone).

Picasso mixed these elements together to form what many consider to be one of the greatest pieces ever made — Guernica.
