This article will give you an overall introduction to how Google trends work, along with some tips and tricks.
History of Google Trends

Before creating your account, you will first need to do some research into how trends work. This article will go over all of that! So, let’s get started by looking at the history of Google Trends.
Google Trends was actually founded in 2009 as an internal tool for developers to use. It wasn't until about two years later when it opened up to the general public. Since then, it has quickly become one of the most well-known tools used to find out what's happening with popular search terms.
Now that we've gone over the basics of how Google Trends works, let's take a look at some examples.
How Google Trends works

Past studies have shown that the average person has an intuitive understanding of how emotions influence perception, behavior, and thinking.
Research shows that when people are experiencing strong positive feelings, they tend to perceive things as being more like what they already believe or know.
In other words, they use cognitive bias to make the world seem brighter.
Conversely, when people are feeling negative or depressed, they may develop perceptual biases towards interpreting ambiguous information in a way that reinforces their existing beliefs.
This is called interpretation bias.
By using this mental shortcut, you’re giving yourself a little bit of help by assuming something before you actually have proof otherwise.
It’s kind of like having a pre-existing assumption about someone before meeting them.
After all, we’ve only got our perceptions and assumptions based off of ourselves and our experiences, right?
Google trends is a powerful tool for studying these perceptual biases.
By looking at the differences in web search terms over time, we can get some clues about why individuals and groups choose to perform certain behaviors, and whether those behaviors contribute to social change or not.
Trending searches are a great place to start your research because they give us insights into how prevalent an idea or topic is within a given population.
And since most people surf the internet from their phones, it gives us a very narrow window into their overall online activity.
Trends are determined based on search queries
Recent trends indicate that people are searching for information about how to decrease stress.
By determining what questions your audience is asking, you can create content designed to help them find the answers.
Here’s an example of this from our own research and expertise. Check it out!
The question “effective ways to reduce stress” has gotten more frequent activity in the past few months. So we decided to do some research to see if there were any natural remedies that work.
We conducted a review of all-natural approaches to reducing stress, and found one interesting tool – arginine.
Arginine is an amino acid that helps promote relaxation by acting as a mild vasodilator (it expands blood vessels). It does this by altering the balance of nitric oxide and endothelin, two chemicals involved in regulating blood pressure.
Fortunately, studies have shown that supplements like arginine can be just as effective as pharmaceutical anti-stress agents.
So why not use natural solutions first before turning to drugs? Luckily, most experts agree that nutritional interventions are a much safer alternative than medications.

Trends are updated periodically

It is important to note that trends are only as good as the data they are using to determine how popular or unpopular an idea, site, product, or service is.
If there is not enough data available, then it will not be able to create an accurate trend chart for those products. This could potentially distort the picture of what people are thinking about these things.
Google collects its search volume data from third-party sources such as YouPulse and SuperMetrics. These two sites collect their data by having users survey each other via questions like “What websites do you use to find out more information about [topic]?”
By looking at the frequencies in which these surveys get completed, we are able to calculate how often people are searching for different topics. We can also see how frequently people talk about these different topics through social media, chat apps, etc.
This is where it gets tricky. Because this data is gathered outside of Google, it is hard to confirm whether these results are actually coming from people doing research on the topic or if they are just talking about it publicly.
What Google Trends reveals about interest in topics

In fact, one of the most important things that Google Trends can tell you is what people are actively searching for. By looking at how popular a search term is over time, we get some clues to help understand the trends in your field or area of expertise.
It’s not just whether people are actively looking up information on a topic, but also why they’re looking it up.
By using the advanced features within Google Trends, you can even look into the reasons why different peaks exist for a specific keyword. For example, if a peak exists for “how to bake the best chocolate chip cookies,” then it’s likely that many people are trying to find easy recipes for baking chocolate chip cookies!
Google Trends will also give you an indication of how much activity there has been around a certain topic, which can provide valuable insights. For example, if you notice that there have been a lot of searches related to a particular book, this may mean that it has received lots of attention and thus, its sales have been through the roof.
What Google Trends reveals about consumer interest in products

A quick reminder: when you do online shopping, you usually look at several sites to find the best deal. That is why it can be tricky to determine which websites are more popular than others!
It’s not like there's one site that keeps track of how many people visit each competitor, so most compare sales via word-of-mouth, comments, or by checking out the product directly on their website.
By comparing what people search for around the same time frame, however, we're able to get an idea of whether or not someone else considered the competition a good place to shop, and if they found what they wanted there.
How to use Google Trends

Using Google Trends is simple, just like using any other tool in the internet! You can search by keyword or phrase and it will show you how popular that specific term is across all of its products.
Google trends works via their algorithm which measures the volume of searches for a given topic over time. The timescale can be monthly, yearly, five year averages, or even ten years!
So what does this tell us about the popularity of different colors?
Well, red has been topping the charts as the most searched color since at least 2005, with some peaks being much higher than others. It seems people are either really into rich shades of red, or they’re trying to give themselves a calm break after spending too long in high energy levels such as taking an exam or shopping.
Other top colors include green (for nature lovers) and blue (for calming effects). These have fluctuated in popularity slightly over the past decade.
Examples of Google Trends

Recent events are always popular search terms, so to see what people searched for after the most recent major event or announcement, you have to compare before and after statistics. For example, if there was a lot of traffic immediately following a national holiday, then the week leading up to that day must have been more crowded as well.
By looking at historical data, we can also get some insights about how much interest certain topics hold. For instance, anyone who is curious about the effects of chocolate may be interested in learning more about The Health Benefits of Chocolate.
Google trends allows you to check out specific keywords and determine the average monthly searches for those terms. This gives us an idea of just how popular a keyword is, and whether it’s growing in popularity or fading away.
There are several ways to use this information. One way is to compare the average monthly searches for a given term with other similar terms to identify differences in popularity. A second option is to look at the difference between two different times to determine changes in interest.
You can also compare one time frame to another to find peaks and valleys in online activity. For example, if you were looking for information about how to make homemade pasta, you could compare March to February to see if there was a change. If there was a drop in numbers, you would know something got canceled or people found a better source.
